FBI seeks truck drivers nationwide who may be victims in 54-count tax fraud case

A Georgia tax preparer gained clients throughout the trucking industry through word-of-mouth referrals. Federal prosecutors claim that trust later exposed at least 26 people to an extensive tax scheme. Most identified clients worked as self-employed truck drivers who relied on her company for essential filings. The FBI now wants other potential victims to come forward.

Diane Marie Poe, 62, owns Genuine Financial Services in Walton County, Georgia. Her company offered bookkeeping, payroll management, tax preparation and filing assistance. Customers provided GFS with money intended for estimated obligations or employee-related assessments. Prosecutors accuse Poe of keeping those funds instead of delivering promised services.

Truck drivers trusted word-of-mouth referrals

A federal grand jury returned a 54-count indictment against Poe this week. The Aug. 12 filing includes 32 bank fraud charges and 14 payroll-related tax offenses. Additional accusations cover corporate returns, false submissions and government program theft. Authorities have not announced a date for her initial court appearance.

The bank fraud counts each carry a maximum potential sentence of 30 years. Federal program theft allows up to 10 years per charge. Other violations carry maximum penalties ranging from one year to five years. The federal system does not offer parole.

Investigators also claim Poe mishandled her own personal and business obligations. She allegedly failed to properly submit required returns for GFS. Prosecutors further accuse her of withholding employee payroll taxes without forwarding that money. These accusations remain unproven unless the government establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

FBI seeks additional potential victims

Many trucking customers found Poe through recommendations from other people, according to federal authorities. Investigators believe additional clients may not know whether GFS completed their filings. Affected individuals could face missing payments or unresolved obligations without immediate warning. Government notices may provide their first indication that something went wrong.

Anyone who hired Poe or used GFS can contact FBI Atlanta at 770-216-3000. Authorities specifically want information from customers who suspect missing deposits or uncompleted services. The bureau continues its nationwide investigation alongside the IRS. Local agencies also provided assistance during the inquiry.

Those partners include the Loganville Police Department and Walton County Sheriff’s Office. The Walton County District Attorney’s Office also supported the federal investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Peach represents the government in this prosecution. Authorities presume Poe innocent unless a court determines otherwise.

Why it matters

Independent truck drivers often entrust outside companies with payroll records, filings and money owed to the IRS. Missing deposits can leave them facing unexpected liabilities long after transferring those funds.
