California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Liles died after his motorcycle collided with a truck-tractor Sunday evening. Another passing vehicle then struck the officer after the initial impact. The crash happened along State Route 99 near Tipton, California. Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures, but Liles died at the scene.
Liles, 44, rode a department-issued motorcycle northbound when the collision occurred south of Avenue 152. CHP placed the initial incident around 5:11 p.m. near State Route 190. Authorities have not released additional circumstances explaining what led to the impact. The agency identified the death as occurring while Liles worked on duty.
More than 16 years with CHP
Liles served California communities for more than 16 years after graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010. His first assignment took him to the San Jose Area. He later worked in Hayward and Fresno before transferring to Visalia during 2019. In December 2025, he joined that office’s first group of motorcycle officers after completing specialized training.
Gov. Gavin Newsom honored Liles following the fatal crash. “Officer Brian Liles dedicated his life to serving our communities,” Newsom stated. The governor called his death a heartbreaking loss for CHP and California. State officials lowered flags at the Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space to half-staff.
Liles became CHP’s first line-of-duty death since 2020, according to the governor’s office. He leaves behind his wife, two children, parents and two sisters. The CHP 11-99 Foundation announced $50,000 in emergency and death benefits for his wife. The organization provides assistance to California Highway Patrol employees and their families.
CHP honors Liles with bell toll tribute
CHP personnel gathered Wednesday at the academy in West Sacramento to honor their fallen colleague. Commissioner Sean Duryee and Chief Mike Lehman spoke during the Bell Toll Tribute. Family, friends, professional staff and members of law enforcement also attended the ceremony. The memorial bell recognizes officers who lose their lives while serving California communities.
Investigators have not publicly identified the truck driver or carrier in the available releases. The announcements provide no information about possible citations or contributing factors.
